About Merlion the Musical
Once Leo, the King of Lion City, married a beautiful fish lady called Aquina. Leo had to go back home, not knowing that Aquina bore a mixed-race child named Merlene. Years later, Merlene set out to seek the father she had never met. On her journey across the sea, she passed the Island of Blakang Mati (now known as Sentosa). It was the den of the dreaded swordfish gang, the enemies of the Lion people. Merlene escaped from them, and finally she reached the Lion City.
Merlene’s father, Leo, was delighted to see her. But the swordfish gang attacked the Lion City! Merlene, plucking up her courage, tricked the swordfish and lured them into the banana plantation – where they became trapped among the stems of the banana trees. But Parang, their leader, turned into a huge monster and threatened to destroy the city. Merlene rushed back to her mother’s home, and asked Aquina to lend her a magic jewel which Leo once gave her. With this, Merlene was able to defeat Parang! Leo and Aquina were overjoyed to meet again. The fish people and the lion citizens vowed to always live together in peace and friendship.
This original Singapore musical touches on national themes such as tolerance, diversity, and love of country. The cast includes disabled volunteers and their carers. There are unforgettable songs such as “Little things I Love, in the Lion City” by Valour, commander of the Sea-lion Battalion; “One Night of my Life”, about the undying love between Merlene’s Mother and Father; and “Power of a Lion,” the inspiring call for Merlene to find her courage to defend the Lion City.
