Major Depression Disorder is a mood disorder that affects one’s thoughts, feelings, behaviour, mood and physical health. Depression may be a life-long condition in which periods of remission alternate with relapse of illness. It may require long-term treatment to keep symptoms from returning, just like any other chronic medical illness.

According to DMS-V, people suffering from depression have any five of the following symptopms for more than two weeks:

  • Depressed mood most of the day
  • Diminished interest or pleasure in all or most activities
  • Significant unintentional weight loss or gain
  • Insomnia or sleeping too much
  • Agitation or psychomotor retardation noticed by others
  • Fatigue or loss of energy
  • Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
  • Diminished ability to think or concentrate, or indecisiveness
  • Recurrent thoughts of death
